Elizabeth Smart engaged, will wed in April
Break out the Martinelli’s.
Elizabeth Smart, whose kidnapping and survival story has captivated the state and nation, is engaged to be married.
And the nuptials of Utah’s semi-celebrity are likely to be the sparkling cider toast — and talk — of the town.
The 24-year-old Smart, a senior at BYU, plans to marry in the summer after becoming engaged last weekend, Chris Thomas of Intrepid Communications confirmed Friday.
Thomas declined to identify Smart’s fiance or provide details about how the two met, but wedding registries online at Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn list a July 1 wedding date for an Elizabeth Smart and Matthew Gilmour in Utah.
Gilmour is from Scotland. The two apparently met while Smart was serving an LDS mission in France last year.
Those clamoring for information on whether the blushing bride-to-be will wear her hair up or down, choose lilies or roses for her reception, and if she will say yes to a dress designed by Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier or local designer Maggie Sottero may be disappointed.
Smart plans to keep her wedding plans close to the vest, Thomas said.
Story continues below
“While she plans to be very publicly involved with her public advocacy work, she has decided she wants to keep the details of her personal life private,” Thomas said.
“She is going to be involved in child advocacy work for a long, long time and really decided that she wants to keep her husband and [future] children out of the public spotlight.”
With Smart’s devotion to the Mormon faith, it’s a good guess that she and her fiance will likely be married in an LDS temple.
That means a modest wedding gown that won’t be strapless or sleeveless.
With the family’s penchant for privacy, the wedding celebration probably won’t be a big splash reminiscent of William and Kate’s royal affair. But it’s not likely the reception following the temple ceremony will take place in a ward gym, with crêpe paper flowing from the basketball hoops, either.
Smart has become increasingly visible as an advocate for crime victims following her nine-month kidnapping ordeal at the hands of Brian David Mitchell in 2002 and 2003.
In November, Smart held a press conference at the state Capitol in the wake of the Penn State sexual abuse scandal, suggesting the Penn State victims could have benefited from a program Smart would like to see implemented in elementary schools called radKIDS [Resist Aggression Defensively]. The program teaches children about calling 911 and making defensive moves against attackers.
Smart has also implored President Barack Obama to appropriate more resources into investigating sexual abuse crimes against children.

MMA News April 28: UFC 129, UFC 133, Matt Hughes, Gilbert Melendez and More
Bleacher Report’s MMA News recap for Thursday, April 28:
Dana White thinks Lyoto Machida’s decline was due to money.
UFC 133 fight card taking shape.
UFC 133: Phil Davis not guaranteed title shot with victory over Rashad Evans.
Matt Hughes and Diego Sanchez targeted for later in 2011.
Dana White supports Gilbert Melendez in the UFC.
Bleacher Report’s Mike Hodges:
t’s safe to say we won’t be seeing any Strikeforce fighters in the UFC for the time being.
UFC President Dana White has made it clear that Strikeforce fighters must fulfill their contract obligations prior to joining the UFC. However that has not stopped the UFC boss from voicing his opinion on certain people, including Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez.
Melendez, who has been preparing training partner, Jake Shields for his upcoming title bout against Georges St-Pierre at UFC 129, is one of those fighters who White has admired for quite some time.
“Gilbert’s one of the top guys in the world, no doubt about it,” White said during the UFC 129 press conference.

Bleacher Report’s Mike Hodges:
According to MMAJunkie.com, a welterweight bout between UFC hall of famer Matt Hughes and Diego Sanchez is scheduled for a soon-to be announced UFC event, expected to be held in the fall of this year.
“A matchup between two welterweight fan favorites has been verbally agreed to as Diego ‘The Dream’ Sanchez will face former UFC welterweight champion and Hall of Famer Matt Hughes,” UFC president Dana White said.
Since transitioning to welterweight last year, Sanchez has had a comfortable run at 170lbs.
His debut saw him lose to John Hathaway but he has since rebounded with two consecutive wins, earning victories over Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann.
Sanchez will now meet Matt Hughes in what is sure to be an intriguing matchup.

Bleacher Report’s Sal DeRose:
If you thought Phil Davis would earn the top contender spot with a win over Rashad Evans at UFC 133—think a little harder.
Evans hasn’t fought since last May when he beat Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
Evans since then has held the top contender spot in the light heavyweight division, and instead of fighting, opted to wait for Mauricio “Shogun” Rua to heal and fight him for the title.
Well Evans waited and injured himself a month before his title shot with Shogun was supposed to happen. Jon Jones then stepped in and dethroned Shogun and became the youngest UFC champion.

Bleacher Report’s Sal DeRose:
UFC 133 has now become a hot card this summer with its big main event that now pits young up-comer Phil Davis against the likes of Rashad Evans.
Jon Jones had to pull out of his late summer/early fall bout with Evans due to an injury sustained in his hand.
So with a big main event like Davis versus Evans, UFC 133 has gone other routes to compliment the bout.
On the UFC 133 card is also a bout between light heavyweight UFC veterans Rich Franklin and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
Also set for UFC 133 is a bout between middleweights, Vitor Belfort and Yoshihiro Akiyama. Belfort had previously been making a push to appear at UFC 134 later in August in his home country of Brazil.
The UFC 133 card is expected to take place in Philadelphia on August 6.
Michael McDonald was previously expected to face Nick Pace at UFC 133, but an injury to Kid Yamamoto led McDonald to fill in for him at UFC 130.

Bleacher Report’s John Heinis:
How important is it for Lyoto Machida to beat Randy Couture at UFC 129?
Machida legitimately looked like he was going to be the poster child of MMA two years ago.
He went 14-0 as a professional fighter before winning the light heavyweight championship from Rashad Evans.
This was Evans first career loss, and it really wasn’t even close. Machida controlled the pace of the fight and eventually knocked out the fellow undefeated fighter in the second round.
However, from there things began to go south for “The Dragon.”
At UFC 104, Machida won a unanimous decision over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, but this was a match many felt that Machida lost.
While he managed to still do some damage with his elusive striking style, Rua legitimately hurt Machida for the first time in his career with his powerful Muay Thai work.

White IPhone 4 to Arrive, Finally, April 28
The iPhone 4 first dropped into customers’ hands on June 24, 2010, more than ten months ago. But something was missing: When Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the latest revision of Apple’s smartphone earlier that month, he said that it would be available in black or white. The white version never materialized, though — until now. On Wednesday, Apple announced that the white iPhone 4 will finally be launching on April 28, at Apple Stores, AT&T and Verizon Wireless stores, and certain Apple Authorized Resellers.
“The white iPhone 4 has finally arrived and it’s beautiful,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in a statement on Apple’s website. “We appreciate everyone who has waited patiently while we’ve worked to get every detail right.”
It’s been a long and arduous journey to get to this point, one that would frankly make even Odysseus pale. When the iPhone 4 first went up for preorder, Apple’s online store wouldn’t allow customers to preorder the white version, saying only that it was “currently unavailable.” Just before launch, Apple announced that white iPhone 4 wouldn’t ship until late July, citing manufacturing problems. That led to a slew of theories — everything from suggestions that white phones were cracking more easily than their black counterparts, or that light was leaking through the plastic and affecting the camera, or even that the white iPhone 4 had been faked all along. (Well, maybe not that one.)
When July rolled around, Apple CEO Steve Jobs reiterated — during Apple’s press conference about the iPhone 4′s antenna issues — that the white iPhone 4 would be available later that month, but all that surfaced was another delay, pegging the phone’s availability as “later” in 2010. In October, the company said the white iPhone wouldn’t appear until Spring 2011 — subsequently, all trace of it vanished from Apple’s online store.
As the weeks went on and the white iPhone continued to remain unseen, it attained almost mythic status. There were those who wondered if it would ever really appear, whether Apple might have quietly scrapped all intentions to bring it to market. Although I could personally confirm the device’s existence with my own eyes and hands — I used one at WWDC 2010 in the press area — there was a time when I began to question my own sanity: Had I really seen it? Had it been just a trick of the light? Breathless spottings were reported in the wild, along with repeated rumors that it had shown up in retail stores’ inventory systems only to disappear again. Like the Flying Dutchman, the white iPhone 4 seemed doomed never to make port and to bring only doom to those who saw it.
But the portents surged this past week when a white iPhone 4 was reportedly acquired by a Vodafone UK customer, followed by spy shots of retail boxes that seemed to suggest such a release was imminent. And then, finally, Wednesday’s word from on high that the white iPhone will finally descend to earth on April 28 — which, I may note, is uncoincidentally my birthday. Thanks, Apple, but you really shouldn’t have. No, seriously — I bought a black iPhone 4 months ago.
